CD Review: Hot Mess by Cobra Starship
The Band: Cobra Starship
Stand Out Tracks: ”Good Girls Go Bad”, “Pete Wentz Is the Only Reason We’re Famous”, “Hot Mess”
The Review: Last year, Pop-Punk band Cobra Starship achieved their highest peak in mainstream media with their top ten single “Good Girls Go Bad”. However, it’s the rest of the album (which debuted at #4 on Billboard) that gives you the full dose of the 5-piece band from New York.
Lead singer Gabe Saporta is not known for having an incredible singing voice. However, talent is not everything, as he says in “You’re Not In On The Joke”, “I had no skill but I had heart so then I turned it around”. While the “I Don’t Care What You Think” persona has been known to backfire on many artists, Cobra Starship plays it to near perfection.
The songs are catchy, up beat, and have lyrics that playfully beat up on those who are less than favorable with the band. A notable quote comes from the song “Pete Wentz is the Only Reason We’re Famous” (which derives from an online comment made about the band), where Saporta sings “I may not be loved, but they always remember my name.”
Even though their second single, “Hot Mess”, has not fared as well as “Good Girls Go Bad” on the charts, this band (and their attitude) has the potential to get bigger in the coming years.
The Rating: 4 out of 5
