CD Review: Baylin EP by Baylin
The Band: Baylin
The Album: Baylin EP
Standout Track(s): “Remora”
The Review: South Florida seems to be a breeding ground for female-fronted bands. It provided listeners with the upbeat pop music of Hey Monday and the progressive-rock style of VersaEmerge. Now South Florida has done it again with the band Baylin.
Baylin’s self-titled debut EP shows how much potential the band possesses. Singer Sam Cannon, who is only a senior in high school, doesn’t have an overly dominating voice, but obviously has a talent for singing that can only grow stronger. There’s room for improvement on the EP as the band seems to still be in the process of developing and tightening their sound.
The EP opens up with their song “On The Shoulder of Giants,” which is hardly distinguishable from their next song “Amid The Sea.” The next three songs on the EP however do not blend together, and show the great potential the band has. “Remora,” is the best song on the EP and is a mid-tempo track that flaunts the musicianship and lyrical abilities Baylin has for such a young band. The next song “With Enough Balloons Anything Can Fly,” has intricate guitar work and provides a solid foundation for the listener of the sound the band is trying to achieve. “Drop Your Ego, Not My Name” is the last song on the EP and would be better if it didn’t drag out for five minutes, but it still makes for a good song overall.
Still in the infancy of their musical career, Baylin has already got picked up by The Synergy Agency and have plenty of time to hone their skills as a band. So be on the look out to hear more from Baylin in the near future!
The Rating: 3 out of 5
