CD Review: Love Drunk by Boys Like Girls
The Band: Boys Like Girls
The Album: Love Drunk
Stand Out Tracks: “Love Drunk,” “She’s Got A Boyfriend Now,” and “The Shot Heard Around The World”
The Review: Boys Like Girls is a band who can be defined as pop rock, but for their sophomore album Love Drunk, they seem to lean more toward the pop side of the spectrum than the rock side. Songs like “Heart Heart Heartbreak” and “Real Thing” are examples of their overwhelming pop tendencies that feature synthesized beats and oh so catchy choruses.
For the most part, old fans won’t be disappointed being that their theme of relationships, fleeting love, and break-ups still stand true on Love Drunk just like it did for their debut album. However, it seems like Boys Like Girls songs are definitely catering more toward their female audience and mainstream radio, and this is especially evident with their ballad “Two Is Better Than One,” featuring a duet with pop star Taylor Swift.
All of the songs on the album are done quite well, but there are a few that rise above the rest such as their first single “Love Drunk” which is an ironic song as they sing about a break-up but the mood of the song is cheerful, and poppy. Then there is their song “She’s Got A Boyfriend Now,” which if it became their next single it would be an instant hit with it’s playful melodies and simple lyrics. The last standout track is their song “The Shot Heard Around The World,” which shows Boys Like Girls experimenting with an edgier side of pop music.
With their album Love Drunk, Boys Like Girls will continue to dominate mainstream radio, expand their fan base, and remain the guilty pleasures of many people.
The Rating: 4 out of 5
