INTERVIEW:
How was the writing/recording process for your new album “A New Day?”
It was a new experience for all of us. John and Connor wrote all the Guitars and would record demos of the songs and I would put vocals to them. On previous records, Connor and John didn’t do as much writing, so this was a way for those guys to showcase their talents and writing ability. We then hooked up with our friend Tim Java who did all the drumming on the tracks. He is an amazing drummer and did all the drumming in the band Dead To Fall. It was nothing short of amazing to have him recording the drums on the record.
Why did you choose to work with Matt Goldman as your producer again?
Matt is someone we have worked with in the past and we have always enjoyed working with him. We wanted to go with someone we knew and would be comfortable working with.
What can fans expect “A New Day” to sound like in comparison to your previous material?
It’s different, but in a good way. It’s refreshing.
Why did you decide to name your album “A New Day?”
It’s themed around the concept of putting the past behind us. It’s about enjoying life, appreciating today and looking forward to tomorrow. No matter what happened in the past, you have to leave it at that and put it behind you. We live and we learn and it’s the experiences that make us stronger.
What’s your favorite song off the new album and why?
My favorite song is the first track, Daymaker. It’s a personal song on a number of levels, but also is a lot of fun to play.
In a blog post, you mentioned that Jesse Barrera (My American Heart) sung on the chorus on one of your new tracks. How’d you hook up with him to sing on one of your songs?
We had a song we wanted to have some singing on and Jesse has been a good friend of ours for years. We love everything that he does and we just hit him up to see if he would be down and he was stoked! We sent him over the track and he recorded the chorus in his home studio and sent it back to us. It was a lot of fun having him apart of this. He is doing some big things lately with his solo career. Check him out!!
Can you explain the album artwork a little further – How’d you come up with the design? Why’d you choose it? Does it have any correlation with themes in the album?
The artwork definitely ties into the theme of the record. The layout shows more of the guy on the cover walking through a city where he is seeing images from his past. The cover symbolizes his death. He’s tired, worn out and it’s him realizing no matter how hard he tries to change the past or bring it back, there’s nothing he can do. It’s accepting that and knowing tomorrow is going to be a new day, a new chance, a new life.
Can you give SUR readers a not-so-distant peek into the future of Four Letter Lie?
Gold record
Can you give me one Straight Up Random fact about each member of the band?
John is in the guiness book of world records, Connor is a professional cliff jumper, Brian owns his own pizza shop, Dirty Sean hasn’t washed his hair in a year. Tai was born in Alaska.
Any last words for the readers of Straight Up Random?
