So how are you liking Warped tour so far?
I love it. It’s my favorite tour I’ve ever done. For sure.
What’s been your favorite place to play?
I think my favorite show….let’s see…one was Pittsburgh because it was like the biggest and craziest crowd we’ve had. It was just like a sea of people. It was very exciting. And then also, my second favorite one was probably Boston. It was really weird because we played first in Boston, and I was really bummed because I was afraid that no one was going to be there, and it was pouring rain, but it was our second biggest and craziest crowd. Like everyone was drenched, and we were soaking wet on stage. It was like really different, and it was fun.
How does Warped Tour compare to playing in a normal venue, and which do you like better?
I definitely like Warped Tour better. Well, it’s weird because when you do club tours, you’re at the club from like 3 in the afternoon to like 10 PM or 11 PM, but here [Warped Tour], you wake up at like 8 in the morning and you’re there, and you’re there until like 3 in the morning, until your bus leaves. It’s crazy because like it’s a lot more work, but it’s cool because you get to be outside, and I definitely prefer being outside than inside. And there’s so many bands, so many people. I think there’s like 400 people on this tour or 500, including the production crew and all that. So it’s just cool. It’s like high school without the shitty people that make fun of you, and you don’t have to go to class.
Have you guys been writing any new material lately?
Yea, we’re actually recording our second album in September and October in Minneapolis with a guy named Jordan Schmidt. It’s going to be out in the spring time. So we’re already working on a new one.
So there’s a lot of pop rock bands out there, how do you guys try and stick out from the rest of them?
I think that one thing that we do really well, that I don’t think a lot of other bands do well, is that we’re a really obtainable band, you know? Like you don’t have to go to our signings to meet us because we’re walking around and we’re doing acoustic performances at our merch tent, and we’re sitting at our merch tent. We don’t like hanging out on our bus everday. We’re really interactive and love meeting new people. And I think when we go on stage, we show people how much fun we really have. Because like a lot of bands go on stage and try and look cool or look badass, or yell, you know what I mean? I think we do a really good job of having a good time and showing it.
How did you guys come up with the concept of the video for “Come Around?”
We actually didn’t come up with the concept, the director that we chose did. We got a bunch of different treatments for the video and a lot of them were like boy meets girl, fall in love, blah blah blah blah blah – like that kind of music video. That was just like a video we didn’t want to do because that’s what everyone does. So when we saw the treatment it was like “oh yea, you’re going to be in suits, running around, taking each other out, and like blah blah blah, and you get to kiss an actor” and I was like “siiiiiccck!” And I was like let’s do this one. It was sweet.
Why did you choose that song to make a video for?
When we made our record we knew that we wanted to make videos for “No One Can Touch Us,” “Don’t Save Me,” and “Come Around.” And “Come Around” was the last one that we did.
You’re usual guests to the Denny’s Allnighter Parties, so what exactly goes down at one of those parties?
Okay, so basically what happens is, we all pile in this van, like one time we fit like 22 people in a van, and we go to Dennys and we go in and sit down and they let people in one by one, and people get to go around an say “Hi,” and take pictures and do whatever they want. And then everyone usually sits down and eats as well. It’s really fun. It’s cool.
What are your plans after this tour?
To record the second album. Those are the only plans we got so far.
Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?
Ben lives in Menomoni, Wisconsin and not a lot of people know that he’s from Wisconsin. Sick Boy is from Indiana and not from Minnesota. Nate’s favorite band is the Jonas Brothers, I’m colorblind, and Kieren…has played classical violin since he was like two years old. Those are some random facts.
Any last words for the readers of Straight Up Random?
Come check us out on Warped Tour. We play everyday on the Hurley stage. Our album Come Around came out last September so come check that out if you haven’t heard already. And thanks to everyone that’s coming out to hang out with us.
