INTERVIEW:

So how good does it feel to be back in Florida?

Chris: It feels hot…

Christian: I love it

Chris: It feels sticky and rainy and I love it, except I have a cold. That’s the only bad part, but I love it.

Christian: Yesterday when we got here everybody else on our bus was like complaining about saying “Oh my god, it’s so hot”, so I walked outside and I’m like, this is what it’s supposed to be like. It’s amazing.

What’s been your favorite place to play?

Chris: Well, we obviously have a lot of love for our hometown, but as far as Warped Tour goes, I really really enjoyed playing…

Christian: Camden

Chris: Camden! It was right next to Philly. Kids went insane and for some reason at that show I felt like everybody was like really paying attention and really getting into it and really enjoying the show. And getting that vibe was just like, perfect. It was an amphitheatre; it was completely filled, it was really cool.

Christian: I’m stoked for tomorrow’s venue because it’s right on the water. I don’t know if you’ve ever been over to St. Pete where they do Warped Tour; it is very nice. We’re stoked about it.

Chris: Vinoy Park is really cool. I was born over there actually so it’ll be cool to go back over.

Do you find it challenging to win over the crowds at Warped Tour or have you been receiving good feedback?

Chris: It’s kind of half and half you know. You have your kids that are there waiting to see you 30 minutes to an hour before, that are singing along, screaming your name as you set up, it’s very personal. But then there’s also tons of kids, especially in an amphitheatre setting, that want to get out of the sun, get out of the rain, and they’re just sitting there and they’re finding out about your band. Warped Tour is just a huge melting pot of music and genres so kids can come not knowing your band and leave loving your band.

Christian: I think that’s the purpose of Warped Tour, and it’s nice, especially for a band like us that’s trying to get our name out there. It’s awesome to be on this tour.

Chris: I love playing to new audiences. Don’t get me wrong, the fans that we have are amazing, but playing to a new audience, even if they’re not singing, but prospecting and concentrating, can’t get anything better than that.

What is something that you will take away as a learning experience from this tour?

Chris: So much. We’re getting influenced everyday from every other band; seeing new music, seeing crowd reactions, you learn and you get better, and you just try out new things and it’s awesome.

Christian: Yea, the same. We’re definitely learning a lot out here from some of the older bands that are out here. I think it’s the right place for us right now to be on this tour.

Chris: I want to give a shout out to the boys in Less Than Jake. They’ve had a lot of really good things to say to us; taken us under their wing. We learned a lot from them – they’re veterans on Warped Tour so…

Your new album A Little Faster was released last month, so how was the recording process for that compared to your EP?

Chris: Five of the songs [from the EP] were recorded when we were a lot younger before we were signed, so when we recorded the EP that was released on Hopeless [Records], we went back into the studio really quick in like two weeks we just hammered out three new songs, and reworked some of the old ones in mixing to make it all sound even, and released that. So it kind of wasn’t like, we did all of that at once – it was really quick; just something to put out once we signed. But recording the album was a completely fresh start. Like, we spent time, working out songs, working out demos, went into the studio for about a month and a half, and worked with a couple of really great producers. It just had a completely natural vibe to it. Just doing a record all at once was something new to us, but just a great experience. It came out great. Natural, and a little faster, is what it is.

What’s your favorite song to play live off the new album?

Christian: Well, there’s songs that I want to play live that we haven’t played yet, but as far as ones that we play live right now, I would probably go with “Backbone.” I have a lot of fun playing that song.

Chris: Right now on Warped, I have a lot of fun playing a song called “The Remedy.” It’s like the opening track; it’s a little more energetic. Probably one of our heavier songs but it’s cool because kids’ eyes widen sometimes on Warped when they hear that because it’s a little heavier for us. Fun for the drummer.

What are your plans after the tour?

Chris: Tour, tour tour.

Christian: Yup. We’re going to keep touring, that’s for sure. We’re going to be all over the U.S. We’re going to be touring in the fall, but we can’t say with who yet, but it will be out there soon. But yea, we won’t stop.

Chris: Anybody from the U.K., we’ll be there in March. First UK tour.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?

Christian: Jay likes to rock a mustache quite often. Maika asks a lot of questions. Chris likes to look in the mirror and flip his hair. [Chris demonstrates for us how he flips his hair]. Like that [laughs].

Chris: It’s a bad habit. Alright, Maika has a really hard time getting out the door and making decisions for himself. Not in a bad way, just like, he’ll wake up and it’ll take a minute to decide what he actually wants to do with the day. Whether he wants to go to the table or he wants to go get food, play Xbox, or go sell CDs, or hang out with fans – who knows. So sometimes people have to decide for him and be like “You’re going to come with me to go get food, let’s go.” And it’ll take him a minute to decide. Love him for it. Jay is kind of the exact opposite. Jay is really really antsy. He’ll wake up, and I can just see it in his eyes already; he’ll look around and he’s just like excited and is like – what am I going to do? Where am I going to go? Back and forth. He’ll walk in and out of the bus more than anybody. Just in and out in and out doing nothing. And Christian stutters.

Christian: It’s true.

Chris: Not bad but you’ll notice it. Girls think it’s cute. Me – I’m a clean freak, neat freak. It’s a good but I guess can be annoying to people. I’ll like move things around on the bus, but like I don’t know. It’s a good thing I guess. It’s whatever.

Any last words for the readers of Straight Up Random?

Chris: A Little Faster is on iTunes right now, and the music video for “A Little Faster” is on iTunes. Please support us, go pick them up and learn them. Come out and meet us at shows, we want to meet everybody we can, and just have fun with this record.
