CD Review: Off The Deep End by The Friday Night Boys

The Band: The Friday Night Boys

The Album: Off The Deep End

Stand Out Tracks: “Suicide Sunday’” “Stuttering”

The Review: At first spin of the CD, I honestly wasn’t expecting Off The Deep End to have such a dominating pop sound, but after I got over that, I realized that the songs are very fun and pleasing to listen to. The Friday Night boys managed to makes songs that are different from their contemporaries yet retain certain qualities that makes their music easily definable as pop rock. The lyrics are nothing new being that all the words to all the songs are about girls, girls, girls. Each song could fall into two different categories: Relationships (“Permanent Heartbreak,” “Unforget You”) and Girls in General (“Molly Makeout,” “Love Letter,” “Finding Me Out,” “Hollow”). Aside from the lyrics, the music is irresistibly catchy. No doubt about it, when listening to Off The Deep End you will find yourself bopping your head along when you hear the upbeat tempo of songs like “Suicide Sunday,” and “Stuttering.” The vocals of singer Andrew Goldstein serenade the listener with his soft and airy singing that flows smoothly alongside the bands polished pop tracks. Just listen to their song “Can’t Take That Away” and you’ll know what I mean. Synthesizers are tastefully used throughout the CD – they don’t use an overwhelming amount (due to the fact that they’re an actual band who can play instruments and they don’t need to rely on synthesizers to come up with beats for their songs) but use just enough to enhance some of their songs. The Friday Night Boys have definitely found the recipe for making perfect pop rock. Off The Deep End is spunky yet sugary pop with a dash of innocence. Any fan of pop rock will thoroughly enjoy the batch of songs The Friday Night Boys cooked up.

The Rating: 4 out of 5
