Warped Tour ‘08: Farewell
Interview with Farewell
So how has Warped been so far? Any random experiences?
Kevin: Hot. Marshall: Hot, rainy…
Kevin: Naked.
Marshall: Naked…
Kevin: Food.
Marshall: Food is good, our RV is really stinky at times. Eww, we had to experience dumping the septic tank on our own.
Buddy: Oooh, check this out! Can I go there? Can I go there?
Marshall: Let’s keep it…
Buddy: Awww… [waves hands in air like he’s no fun]
Marshall: Okay, go ahead.
Buddy: Alright, alright, alright.
Kevin: Just talk about it, but don’t use naughty words.
Buddy: Alright, me and Chris were emptying the septic tank the other night, and…Kevin: Put it in a Haiku. [Kevin laughs]
Buddy: Anyway, dookie went all over the parking lot, the thing popped off, out of control. Next question.
Marshall: And we had to bail because I think like there’s a $1000 to $5000 fine. Anway, Warped tour! Warped Tour is amazing though.
Is this your first time playing on warped tour?
Marshall: Yes, this is our first time touring Warped Tour. We played like a one off because we won like a battle of the band thing like a year ago when we played, but this is our first time touring on it.
Were you excited or nervous to be on the tour?
Kevin: Both.
Marshall: Yeah, both. We heard that it’s a grueling experience which is how it’s been, but we’ve also heard that it’s totally worth it, and it has been, so that’s cool.
So you guys are only doing 2 weeks…
Marshall: Two weeks?! Nope. [puts out hand] Five weeks.
Five weeks?
Marshall: We’ve been on from the beginning.
Kevin: You probably found that off a website.
Marshall: [makes buzzer noise] EERRRRR!
I’m sorry. Yeah, I got it off a website.
Marshall: Yeah, we’re doing most of the Warped Tour.
Do you ever plan on doing the whole entire tour?
Kevin: If they’d let us.
Marshall: Yeah, sure. We would love to do that.
What do you guys do to keep yourself busy up until you perform?
Marshall: Usually we take advantage of the air conditioning in our RV. We play games, eat food. We’ve been writing music a little bit. So we try to do that on our downtime. And we promote a lot because our stage this year isn’t listed on the big sign, so we have to go around and like promote our band’s time. So we do that.
Kevin: Or sometimes [the poster] all blow off and we hope to god that they’ll all get to the stage by that time.
What do you guys do afterwards?
Kevin: Get naked.
Marshall: Yeah we get naked.
Kevin: As quick as we can.
Marshall: Because we’re soaking wet and everybody gets naked and gets uncomfortably close to each other. [moves closer to Kevin]
Kevin: And then we throw dirty laundry. [makes throwing motion with his arms]
Marshall: And then we throw our dirty laundry and we, and we just wait for who backs up the first. If you touch genitals, then you’re in trouble! [everybody laughs]
I’m just kidding, you don’t have to put — [laughs] — you don’t have to use that.
So how do you guys keep performing every day and keep up the great energy?
Marshall: Our music’s really fun to play. I mean like, we feed off the crowd, we feed off catering. It’s just easy, it’d be different if we were a different kind of band, but you know we’re a pop punk band on Warped Tour, and that’s the best place to be so…
When you perform, how do you try to stand out amongst the other bands?
Buddy: Uhhh, get really sweaty. Get really sweaty and just, and just, you know, I don’t know, I don’t know.
Marshall: I think we kind of expand the line, like of our image, like our merchandise and stuff is very like cutesy, but us as a band we’re very like normal guys. We’re not really like all, fashion oriented or whatever and so when we’re on stage I think we kind of cross the line between like a band that people expect us to be a certain way, and then see us and, we’re more like a punk rock band, but we play poppier music.
Is the music you’re working on going to be poppier too?
Marshall: The new stuff, there’s no telling. Some of the stuff we’ve done is more stripped down like Green Day, sort of punkier, and then it goes in the complete opposite direction as well, so we’ll see. I think it’ll all make sense in the end.
So your album released in the UK in February. How has the response been over there?
Marshall: It’s been amazing, the UK. We’ve had a lot of press over there and a lot of positive feedback. Hopefully we’ll get to go over there at some point, and tour. But yea, I mean it was surprising to find out about the buzz they had about our band over there.
What are your plans after Warped?
Buddy: I’m going to move along, until tomorrow, take a shower.
Marshall: We’re gonna take a little bit of time off to record, to actually demo our songs. We’re supposed to record in December, but we’ll see. I think we’re gonna just write the music, take some downtime, spend some time with family and friends. And… that’s it.
Can you give us one straight up random fact about yourselves?
Marshall: You go first, Kevin.
Kevin: Straight up random fact… about our band or myself?
Yourself.
Kevin: Oh, I used to ride bulls.
Buddy: My mom told me…
Marshall: Do your name!
Buddy: My name? Oh yeah, that’s right. Okay, my mom recently…
Kevin: It’s like Batman.
Buddy: Oh yeah, my name is Lubie Francis Bell III [everybody chuckles] and, what I was gonna say was my mom told me that I should wear white socks with shorts instead of black socks with shorts [everybody starts laughing, but he’s still trying to talk, yet he’s laughing as well] because I look like an idiot.
Marshall: Something weird about me… Oooh, growing up, I always wanted to be a stand up comedian, like that’s what I really wanted to do more than anything, and my mom told me no. [everybody laughs] She said that, that won’t happen.
But she supported your “rockstar” lifestyle instead?
Marshall: Well, she wanted me to stay in school because they spent a lot of money on that, but no matter what I did, they’ve been very supportive… they’re happy now.
