Concert Review: Bamboozle Roadshow

Interviews:

Cash Colligan of The Cab

When: April 15, 2009

Where: Ft. Lauderdale, Fl @ Revolution Live

The Review: This year’s installment of the Bamboozle Roadshow was not as diverse as last years line-up which included Metro Station and Armor For Sleep. This year’s line-up was very pop oriented and included Mercy Mercedes, NeverShoutNever, The Cab, Forever The Sickest Kids, and We The Kings.  Mercy Mercedes took to the stage first, and they were great. They bounced around the stage with high energy, and the crowd loved it. Although not many people knew about Mercy Mercedes beforehand, it didn’t stop the crowd from getting into the music. NeverShoutNever came on next, and the entire audience knew who Christopher Drew was. The mere sight of him made fan-girls scream out and make heart symbols with their hands which Mr. Drew returned as well. Immediately when going into his first song, the whole crowd sang along to every word, and every song after, they did the same.  It was surprising to see the overwhelming response from the crowd to NeverShoutNever since he, unlike every other band on the tour, is unsigned. He is an example of a musician who was able to make a large internet presence for himself via social networking sites like MySpace, and his internet fan-base transcend into an actual fan-base at concerts. Following NeverShoutNever’s performance was The Cab. Everytime I see The Cab, they’re performance gets better and better. They know how to work the crowd, and their musicianship is great. Singer Alex DeLeon has an amazing voice that sounds better live than on a recording, and during their set they sang their cover of Rihanna’s “Disturbia” that they previously recorded for the Punk Goes Pop 2 CD. The Cab are a puzzling case however, due to the fact that there wasn’t nearly as many people singing along to them as there were for NeverShoutNever. With a label like Fueled By Ramen/Decaydance behind them, being a part of the Rock Band Tour with fellow labelmates Panic At The Disco, and being on MTV, I thought by now they would have been larger than life. I guess they won’t be selling out Revolution by themselves anytime soon, but they are coming back to the Culture Room August 1st for their headlining tour, so we’ll see how that goes. Forever The Sickest Kids took the stage next, and I am always pleasantly surprised at how fun they make a show. Energetic and interactive, these ‘Sickest Kids are pros when it comes to putting on a good live performance with their playful personalities. Like in the case with NeverShoutNever, the whole audience sang and bounced along to every song they had to offer. A backdrop fit for a king, or rather, We The Kings, cued the crowd who was coming on stage next. We The Kings has grown as a band from opening shows for Cobra Starship at the Culture Room to headlining a sold-out show at Revolution. They had a good show as well and the crowd seemed to be really into it by singing along (although not nearly as loud as they did for NeverShoutNever and Forever The Sickest Kids) and crowd surfining. They saved their catchiest tune “Check Yes Juliet,” for last, and ended the night on a high note.
