INTERVIEW:

***All questions answered by Ryan Dunson of Rookie Of The Year****

You’re currently on your summer tour with School Boy Humor and The After Party. How have the shows been so far?

Very impressed with all the people coming out! its alot of new fans and old.. so its been great! and all the bands on this run have been very nice and fun to hangout with!

What’s been your favorite part about the tour?

Well just playing i guess. i did alot of acoustic shows..and it was great to go back full band!

You’ll be stopping in South Florida at the venue Rocketown on July 31st. What can your Floridian fans, or just your fans in general, expect from your live show?

The live show is alot of new songs! and a few old ones… its really energetic show.. and we have lights also! so its neat

What’s your favorite part about playing a show in Florida? Least favorite?

Well rookie started in Orlando.. so its always fun to come back to the area.. Florida is hot.. so some of the venues get crazy hot… but i guess that comes with touring.

Your new record, The Most Beautiful, came out last month. How was the writing and recording process of the album?

I wrote about 50 parts… came in and constructed them with matt malpass(Copeland, ying yang twins, lydia, the ready set) and it just formed into what it is..I enjoy working with malpass alot.

You collaborated with a lot of different artists on the album like Andrew Goldstein of the Friday Night Boys and Matthew Thiessen of Relient K. How’d these collaborations come about?

Well I pretty much just hit up all my friends and asked them if they wanted to help out and maybe cowrite… ive never really done that before… I had a blast working with them. Def, amazing experience

Why did you decide to call the album “The Most Beautiful?”

Well I dont really know.. the album was gonna be called The Most Beautiful Girl.. but it changed last min.

How do you feel the album compares to your previous material?

I think its going back to what fans like about rookie.. its kinda just songs.. its not trying to please anybody… just fun songs.

What’s your favorite song off the new album and why?

Stars Fade Blue is my favorite song.. it was the first song i wrote for the record… it was good to know i could write songs on my own still.

What are your plans after this tour?

Heading out with Swimming with Dolphins.. really excited about it. huge fan of austins music.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about yourself?

I eat panera or sushi everyday

Interview: New City Lions

Photobucket

New City Lions are bringing the passion back into music with their songs. This indie-dance/pop band from South Florida balances writing meaningful songs with creating music that makes you want to get off your feet. See for yourself what this band has to offer at their upcoming show with Rookie of The Year on July 31st at Rocketown in Pompano Beach, FL!

LINKS: MySpace | Facebook | TwitterBuy Tickets (July 31st @ Rocketown in Pompano Beach, FL)

INTERVIEW:

***All questions answered by Joshua Card, guitarist of New City Lions***

So how’d the band come together?

New City Lions is mostly compiled of past musical efforts. We’ve all played in different bands together, which eventually lead to this final and life long endeavor, New City Lions.

How’d you come up with the name New City Lions?

It was Josiah’s idea, but nobody really knows how he came up with it. Something about “being a fierce force in the music industry, ready to pounce on all opposing predators.” He kind of keeps it secret. Matt told me Josiah came up with it while they were watching Peewee’s Big Adventure together? I don’t know.

How has the scene in South Florida influenced your music?

South Florida is a huge inspiration to our music. One thing South Florida is very known for is the club and dance scene, which greatly affects our music. We’re not just your standard pop music, especially in our newly written songs that none of you have heard yet! We keep a dance aspect to our music just as much as any other aspect, which really reflects on where we’re from.

How would you describe your sound for people who have never heard your band before?

As hard as it sometimes is to classify your band into a few simple words, or genre, it’s easiest to say we’re Indie Rock/Electronic. In listening to our debut release, the “Never Too Soon EP” you heard a hint of this, but mostly what you heard was Powerpop/Rock. We’ve definitely matured as a band since then, writing more songs we feel are more meaningful, and much more musically intriguing. Our aim is to not be another cookie cutter pop band, who plateaus at a shirt in Hot Topic and a summer on Warped Tour. We want to play music for the rest of our lives, so we’re writing music that lasts.

How does New City Lions try and stand out from other bands in the same genre?

I touched on this in the question before, however there’s much more to us that separates us from the standard band in today’s music industry. We have something that seems to be lacking in today’s artists, and it’s true heart and passion. We dedicate our daily lives to our music, in every way. Not for the reason most would, for the fortune or fame, because TRUST US kids, it’s not all fun and paychecks. But what mainly sets us apart, is that we would be happy and content doing this for the rest of our lives if we weren’t even seeing a dime. All we want is to play. To tour, to be face to face with crowds, to be one on one with our fans, to put out music that means as much to everyone listening to it as it does to us. If we can write a song that touches one person’s heart or life in a positive way, than we’re as successful as any artist has ever been. We care about what we’re doing. These days any 15 [year old] kid can walk home from the mall, open his MacBook, loop a beat, add some synthesizer, and sing some love songs over it and be the next big thing. But that’s everything that we feel is wrong with the music industry. Music used to have such passion with stories to be told. We like to think we’re the genuine breed that once existed.

You have a show coming up on July 31st with Rookie Of The Year at Rocketown. What can fans expect of your live performance?

They can expect what any who has ever seen us knows to expect, a party. We bring all of our energy to every single show we play. Rather it’s for 1 person or 1 million. You came to see a show, you’re getting a show. Specifically for this show, you can expect to hear a lot of new songs. We’re going to be displaying a lot of what to expect from the future of NCL.

What are you looking forward to about the show on July 31st?

Definitely looking forward to hearing feedback on all the new stuff. Also, the same thing we look forward to at any performance, the intimacy of being with the crowd and the joy of getting to show people what we work so hard on.

You’ll also be playing at Warped Tour in Orlando this year. What are you hoping to take away from this opportunity?

There’s endless opportunities and possibilities to playing anything with THAT many people. If we can get rid of some EP’s and make some new friends in the process, we’ll be some pretty happy boys.

Back in May, the band mentioned in a blog about a new EP. How has the writing and recording process been for the EP?

The writing and recording is basically done. A few little touches here and there. However, it’s been slightly delayed. Reason being, we decided to revisit a few of the songs, and make sure they’re being released at their full potential. We’re doing the EP with C&I Studios out of Fort Lauderdale who has been super awesome at working with us and being real patient and helping in the process.

When can we expect a release date for it?

I think it’s safe to say the EP will be done and released by November.

Can you give SUR readers a peek into the not-so-distant future of New City Lions?

Just a peek. LOTS of new music being pumped out. New sounding stuff, that you didn’t really hear from us before. If we had to give you a “you would like us if you like these bands” then we’d say something like, The Killers, Interpol, The Bravery, and even a hint of our own new elements here and there. You can also expect tours, the new EP, a music video, and some other cool things we’re working on.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?

This could get bad. But we’ll keep it nice and clean. Matt has his own language, which he uses in public, leaving everyone clueless to what the hell he could possibly be talking about. Josiah has 1toe that’s smaller than all the others, and it’s name is Sherman. Diaz says “Um” in one sentence more than any other human ever has. And I have a weird sleeping disorder where I freak out and do weird stuff while sleeping, like running around and screaming. It’s terrifying.

Any last words for the readers of Straight Up Random?

THANKS for reading this. We’re honestly super excited for you guys to hear the new music. We’ll be on tour in October and November. We have so much we could say but it would take forever, so just come meet us at a show. Sorry in advanced if Matt says weird stuff. Thanks. <3

Interview: Robots & Butterflies

Photobucket

Hailing from South Florida, Robots & Butterflies are a band that brings a little twist to pop rock. Using dual female and male vocals, they create upbeat songs that are as entertaining as they are unique. See for yourself what this band has to offer at their upcoming show with Rookie of The Year on July 31st at Rocketown!

LINKS: MySpace | Buy Tickets (July 31st @ Rocketown in Pompano Beach, FL)

INTERVIEW:

***All questions answered by Danny, guitar and vocals from Robots & Butterflies***

How did the band come together?

The band came together when our former bass player Adrian Gordon, who is now departed from us, and current singer Abbie Cessena began taking an interest in indie music and decided to start a band. I didn’t join up until a year into the band’s career when former guitar player/vocalist Cody Payne, now of Hopeless Record’s The Dangerous Summer, decided to leave R&B to start his new band.

Why did you decide to name the band Robots & Butterflies?

Our bassist Adrian had been working at a kids play place called Wannado City where one day the “theme of the day” was “robots and butterflies”, some kind of boy and girl thing. He thought that it sounded like a cool band name and, appropriately enough, complimented our blend of male and female vocals.

What made you want to play this genre of music?

We all like our own bands but we all share a love for indie pop music i.e. Valencia, Self Against City, Saves the Day and what have you. In my experience, it’s also my favorite style of music to perform.

Some people think that by having a female singer, that automatically makes them comparable to Paramore. What are your thoughts on this and how do you do deal with such assumptions?

Well, as a Paramore fan myself, I mean it when I say we just don’t sound like them. Our guitar tones are lighter and brighter, our guitar styles are also very different, particularly the kinds of chords and chord progressions we use. As far as our singers go, Hayley Williams is just a monster power house singer, while Abbie has a much softer and natural sounding voice. But you can’t explain these things to people, they don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. If someone thinks we sound like Paramore I take it as a compliment.

How does the scene in South Florida influence your sound?

Some of my favorite and least favorite bands are from South Florida. Every time I see Vega Under Fire play I’m reminded how much better my band could be. But there are also some really terrible bands down here too and when I see them I’m reminded of what direction I need to steer my band away from.

What are you hoping to achieve with your music?

I just want to create something beautiful. Like when I listen to one of my favorite albums and I’m just blown away by the meaning of the lyrics with the accompaniment of a beautiful tune, that’s what I want to give to someone else. In some ways, we’ve done this already, we’ve had fans tell us how much they love our music or even want to get an R&B tattoo which is amazing. So I guess our next goal is to do it on a large scale. It would be nice to make a little money too.

You have a show coming up on July 31st with Rookie Of The Year. What can fans expect of your live performance?

Very excited to rawk out with some pro veterans like Rookie but the fans can definitely expect to hear a few new songs and catch a killer performance, we’ll be showing up to this gig with our A game on for sure.

What are you looking forward to about the show on July 31st?

One of my favorite things about opening for a national touring band is the extra draw you get from the crowd, they tend to bring out the fans from the woodworks that don’t usually make it to local shows thus allowing us to reach a new audience.

What are some of Robots & Butterflies upcoming plans? Any new music or tour dates in the works?

The first thing we’re going to be doing is releasing our new record “Closer to Home”, it’s definitely our best work yet and we’re all very proud of it. The album is dedicated to our old bassist and friend Adrian Gordon. We’ve also been tossing around a few ideas like possibly shooting a music video and of course seeing if we can sell the album to Sony or Warner Bros for a million dollars.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?

Yes. Abbie’s has a german pen pal. Eric VW Golf is named Snorlax. Ryan can put down beer better than anyone I know and I don’t wash my left hand before or after playing a gig bc I’m a creep and I enjoy how playing guitar makes the callous’ on my left hand all crusty.

Any last words for the readers of Straight Up Random?

Thanks for the great interview questions, thanks to everyone for reading! We definitely hope to see you at the show, we’re one of those bands who enjoys the hell out of meeting our fans so please let us know if you love our music!

Interview: Runner Runner

Photobucket

Runner Runner is a band rising from the ashes of previous bands Over It, Don’t Look Down, and Rufio. Creating fun catchy music is what the band does best, and their talent was recognized by Capitol Records who signed them along with David Lettermen’s label, C.E. Music, and the label MRV. The band has begun to see success with their uber catchy single “So Obvious,” which has been playing on various radio stations across the country, and the band is about to embark on a nationwide tour with fellow pop rockers Secondhand Serenade and The White Tie Affair. Read our interview below to learn more about the band, and their new album that comes out on September 28th!

LINKS: Official Website | Facebook | MySpace | Twitter

Interview:

***All questions answered by Ryan Ogren, singer of Runner Runner***

How’d the band come together?

The band was formed from three other bands that grew up in the punk rock scene. My band Don’t Look Down, Nick, Peter, and Jame’s band Over It, and our bass player John’s band Rufio. We all toured together for the last five to ten years, becoming friends and working on music, and then we’re the surviving band members of these other bands, and when those bands stopped playing we formed Runner Runner.

How’d you come up with the name Runner Runner?

Runner Runner is actually a poker term, and it means beating the odds. The two perfect cards have to come to beat your opponant, and we’d like to hope that we’re going to beat the odds and make it in this music business.

How’d your recent signing come about?

We’ve been looking for a home for a long time and Capitol Records and David Lettermen’s record label, you know, feels like family to us. We were managed by David Lettermen’s company, World Wide Pants, and when Capitol Records got in the mix, David Lettermen’s company decides to just start a record label as well. And now, we’re signed to David Lettermen’s record label, Capitol Records, and a record label called MRV, and honestly it feels a lot more like family then business, so it’s pretty rad.

So you have a new album coming out in August…

September. It’s September 28th actually.

Oh ok, awesome. Tell us about the album. How was the writing and recording process for it?

Amazing. We all write in our band, and we’re always bouncing ideas off of each other and we’re constantly writing at home and on the road. And you know, I’ll write a song, Petter will write a song, Nick will write a song, we’ll all work on music together all the time. We got our producer Dave Darling in the mix. He was recommended to us from a guy at our label, and that was just a great fit. As soon as we started working with Dave, we knew it was going to be awesome. We literally narrowed about 50 songs down to 12 songs for the album. So we had a lot of music, and we’re just very excited to get it out there. It comes out in September, and we couldn’t be more excited.

What’s your favorite song off the new album?

Oooh, good question….My favorite song….One of my favorite songs is a song called “Running Away,” it’s actually the last track on the album. It’s a little darker, a little deeper then what some people might think the band is, and I think it’s a good end of the album, and it’s just a little bit darker, and I think it’s going to surprise some people. I don’t know if that’s my favorite, but I like that one a lot right now.

How would you describe your sound for people who have never heard your band before?

We’re just a pop rock band. We love writing big hooks and great lyrics. We want to move people. We want to make them dance, we want to make them feel something. Emotional, melodic, catchy, pop rock.

You’re going on tour with Secondhand Serenade. What are you looking forward to on that tour?

We know John a little bit now, and he’s a really good dude. We’re really excited for the Secondhand Serenade tour. Also the White Tie Affair is going to be playing on that tour, and we’ve already toured with those guys. We know those guys really well. It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of pranks! I’m sure we’re going to be messing around with those guys quite a bit, and the shows are going to be really fun so we can’t wait to get on the tour.

Can you give me one straight up random fact about each member of the band?

Alright, I’m Ryan, and I love tennis. That’s pretty random, right?

I guess [ laughs]

Nick our guitar player, it’s not really random, but he is the nicest guy in the world. The nicest guy in the world. A random fact about Peter is that he was validvictorian of his high school. Random fact about John is that his brother passed away a couple years ago, his younger brother, and he’s got a really cool tribute tattoo on his chest dedicated to his brother.

Aww, that’s really sweet.

It’s awesome. And a random fact about James is he’s in love with his motorcycle.

Does he have a name for it?

I don’t know it’s name, but he’s in love with it for sure.

Any last words for the readers of Straight Up Random?

Thank you so much for checking out our band. You can check us out at online at RunnerRunnerMusic.com, Facebook.com/RunnerRunner, and Twitter.com/RunnerRunner. And thanks to people like you for interviewing people like me. That spreads the word and we really appreciate it.

CD Review: Guaranteed To Disagree by We Are The In Crowd

The Band: We Are The In Crowd

The Album: Guaranteed To Disagree EP

Standout Track(s): “Never Be What You Want”

The Review: Hopeless Records definitely got it right when signing We Are The In Crowd, as the new signees have a lot to offer pop rock fans with their “Guaranteed To Disagree” EP.

Although seemingly coming out of nowhere, We Are The In Crowd prove to be an unexpected breath of fresh air in the over-saturated pop scene. Featuring female and male dual vocals from singers Tay Jardine and Jordan Eckes respectively, makes for an interesting and enjoyable listen.

“Guaranteed To Disagree” is an excellent display of being catchy without compromising the actual talent of the band. Although synthesizers may be present in their songs, there’s no autotune for this band.

Jardine’s surprisingly strong vocals open up the CD with the track “Carry Me Home,” and she continues to show off her singing skills throughout the EP.

Their infectious upbeat tunes (in particular “Lights Out” and “Calendar Pages”) will grab anyone’s attention, but it is the band’s lyrics (see: “Both Sides of the Story”) that are the only thing that really unveil their youthfulness. However, given their target audience, the lyrics seem almost appropriate.

“Guaranteed To Disagree” is quite an impressive collection of pop rock songs for such a young band, and after playing Warped Tour this summer, they’re bound to break out and be another pop rock success story. All I have to say is, We Are The In Crowd “for the win.”

The Rating: 3.5 out of 5
